Onlay (on-lay)
Onlay (or on-lay) is a type of tooth conservation treatments, which mostly resembles fillings. Besides onlay, also inlay and overlay fillings are known.
Inlay is for filling holes in the tooth, and onlay is used in cases where the tails and the face of the tooth needs to be replaced, while overlay is a kind of filling expanding even to the face of the tooth, and it also has tail-protection.
The objective of the onlay fillings belonging to the tooth conservation treatments is to stop the deterioration of the tooth due to decay, and to recover the original state as far as possible. A decaying, neglected tooth continuously deteriorates further, after some time it falls out, it wears or the doctor extracts it. With the help of the onlay even tooth in a relatively bad condition can be saved, as this type of filling is able to cover a great surface, and can recover the tails and face of the tooth used for chewing and biting.
An onlay is prepared exactly the same way as an inlay: it is not prepared by the dentist, but a dental laboratory technician applying the newest achievements of modern technique, putting such an onlay in the hole, which fits the problematic part by a micron. Besides, the tailed surface of the onlay is artificially formed to resemble an original tooth as much as possible, ensuring that the face of the tooth is kept, and the saliva production in the mouth is appropriate, and the food will not get into the stomach half undigested.
